Italian School, 15th Century Style Coronation of the Virgin Identified on a label affixed to the reverse. Oil and gold pigment on panel, 24 1/4 x 20 1/8 in. (61.5 x 51.0 cm), framed (under glass). Condition: Vertical cracks to panel, retouch, craquelure, losses, heavily varnished. The work is probably 19th century. The label on the reverse, which identifies the work work as School of Orcagna, 14th Century, suggests that the piece was x-rayed by Gustave Klimann in 1965. No records of this accompanied the painting. There is a second, partial label affixed to the cradle, with the printed name "Museum of Fine Arts" and handwritten with "Orcagna/Coronation of the Virgin." The surface of the work is fragile, with areas of lifting, but with minimal active flaking. There are multiple vertical cracks to the panel, each with paint losses along it, and some with fairly wide gaps of up to 1/16 inch. The gaps are more pronounced at the top half of the panel. There is surface wear especially to u.l. corner. Losses to paint surface and gesso at u.c. measuring 1 1/2 x 1/2 inch, and two at c.r. (3/8 inch square and 3/8 x 1/4 inch). The work is heavily varnished, with what may be masking varnish. The upper horizontal bar of the cradle has detached from the panel, and one horizontal cradle across the lower half is missing.
