George Frederick Castleden (Anglo/American, 1861-1945) Two New Orleans French Quarter Views: Courtyard of the Little Theatre , St. Peter Street , and Courtyard with Charcoal Brazier Theatre signed and dated "George F. Castleden 38" l.r., Brazier signed and dated "George F. Castleden 37" l.l. Watercolor and graphite on paper, sight sizes to 12 1/2 x 9 1/2 in. (31.8 x 24.1 cm), both framed. Condition: Minor foxing, not examined out of frames. N.B. Ephemera, including a dedicated and signed copy of the book George Frederick Castleden, Etcher-Painter: A Brief Biography , by the artist's wife, Louise Decatur (nee Zingre) Castleden, a personal note from the author, and an etching, Spanish Cabildo Lamp, N.O. , signed and titled by the artist, accompanies the lot. English-born George F. Castleden lived in New Orleans between 1911 and 1936. He was a member of the New Orleans Art League, and advocated for historic preservation of the French Quarter. He is best known for his picturesque views of the Vieux Carré. Etching is signed "G.F. Castleden" in pencil l.r., titled l.l., plate size 6 3/4 x 5 in., framed. Condition: Insect damage/pitting l.l., not examined out of frame.
