John L. Boqueta de Woiserie, (active in America 1797-1815) View of Boston Taken on the South Side of Boston. Signed l.r., titled below. Watercolor and gouache on paper, c. 1809, 24 x 36 1/2 in.,(sight), in a later molded giltwood frame: Condition: Toning, light scratch l.c., margin creases and staining, bottom right and left corners repaired, not examined out of frame. Note: The backing paper retains an old loan exhibition label from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Literature: See Boston Beheld: Antique Town and Country Views, by D. Brenton Simons, New England Historic Genealogical Society, p. 118. It depicts another South Boston view, c. 1809, by John L. Boqueta de Woiserie. According to Simons, "the artist, who worked primarily in aquatint and watercolors, produced views of Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Richmond, and Charleston in the early 19th century."
