French Mantel Clock with Carved Case by H. W. Chaloner, case, Boston, Massachusetts, late 19th century, elaborate carved wooden case in the form of a classical palace with Doric columns, arched windows, dentil molded frieze, winged cherubs opening draperies revealing the Arabic numeral clock dial and open Brocot escapement, surmounted by a mythical chariot with scrolls, acanthus leaves and seven winged cherubs drawn by two prancing horses, eight-day time and strike spring powered French movement with pendulum all enclosed in a custom glass case, ht. of clock 23, wd. 26 in. H.W. Chaloner (Challoner) was a master model ship carver who worked in wood and ivory. According to early papers with the lot, this clock case contains small pieces of from Boston's Old Courthouse, Old South Church and Faneuil Hall. A framed etching of Chaloner at work in his shop accompanies the lot. Age consistent re-gluing but no significant losses or restoration, movement complete but wants cleaning.
