Victorian Quarter-Chiming Table Clock by Adams, movement attributed to Elliott, London, late 19th century, the composite brass dial with applied spandrels and Roman numeral chapter ring signed Adams, Cannon Street, London , subsidiary dials in the arch for Chime-Silent , and chime selection, Westminster Chimes. Chimes on Eight Bells. and Chime on Ten Bells , faux tortoise shell case with sarcophagus top, ormolu mounts, side sound vents and carrying handles, eight-day time, strike and quarter Westminster chime on gongs or chime on eight or ten bells, ht. 28, wd. 19 and dp. 12 1/2 in. An undated letter states that the clock was a gift to James Augustus Hewlett from W. R. Adamson, Battle Abbey, Hastings England. Mr. Adamson was head of Adamson Bell & Co. tea merchants of Shanghai, Tokyo and London. Dial door glass now cracked in lower left hand corner. Minor losses on veneer, age consistent imperfections, movement complete with original pendulum.
