Mahogany Empire Shelf Clock by Silas B. Terry, Plymouth, Connecticut, c. 1833-39, with elaborately carved crest, turned half columns flanking the dial and lower sections, painted wooden dial with Roman numerals, gilt scroll spandrels and raised gilded dots around the 5-in. dia. movement viewing area, columns flanking the reverse-painted lower glass with green draperies pulled back to reveal a reverse-painted tablet depicting a Greek Revival dwelling, frame and attached to the backboard, the bottom board with printed paper label stating Silas B. Terry, Horologist, Manufacturer of Clocks, Time-pieces and Regulators, Plymouth, Conn. , eight-day brass movement with skeletonized front plate, between the plates center mounted countwheel, recoil escapement, iron weights and pendulum, ht. 38 1/2 in. Literature: An identical movement and label is illustrated and discussed in: Kenneth D. Roberts and Snowden Taylor, Eli Terry and the Connecticut Shelf Clock , 2nd edition, pp. 322-24. Provenance: Wesley R. Peterson Collection. Reverse-painted glasses and dial are original and undisturbed, case refinished, probably 3of the 4 feet are replacements, original weights, pendulum and hands.
