Cherry Tall Clock by Eli Terry, Plymouth, Connecticut, c. 1795, with case attributed to Eliphalet Chapin or Simeon Loomis, East Windsor, Connecticut, engraved rococo sheet-brass, silvered dial marked Eli Terry Plymouth , Roman numerals, scroll decoration in the spandrels, eight-day time and strike movement with calendar, wooden pendulum rod, brass faced bob and two tin-cased weights, the case with pagoda facade top, three turned finials, fluted freestanding columns, waist door flanked by fluted quarter columns and ogee bracket base with "Chapin-style" blocking, ht. 95 in. Eli Terry completed his apprenticeship with Daniel Burnap in 1792 and brass movement tall clocks by him are the earliest work of this prominent maker of wooden clocks. Of the several known examples, the present clock is closely related to that pictured and described in Kenneth Roberts, Eli Terry and the Connecticut Shelf Clock pp. 21-23.
