Walter H. Durfee Mahogany Patent Timepiece or "Banjo" Clock, Providence, Rhode Island, c. 1920, painted iron dial with Roman numerals and marked by retailer, Shreve, Crump and Low, Boston , "Concord-style" rope molded frames enclosing reverse painted tablets, the lower depicting and marked The Boston State House, 1830 and signed by the artist D.J. Steele , eight-day weight powered time only movement with dead beat escapement, maintaining power, Geneva stop and front plate stamped Walter H. Durfee, Providence , ht. 44 in. The artist of these painted glasses, Daniel J. Steele, was an early authority on Simon Willard and the patent timepiece and wrote "The Clocks of Simon Willard" for The Magazine Antiques , February 1922. For additional information on Daniel J. Very minor condition issues, slight imperfection on dial glass, 1 1/2 in. section of rope molding gone at top of waist frame, slight border touch up on lower glass.
