Ralph Eugene Cahoon, Jr. (Cotuit, Massachusetts, 1910-1982) "Nantucket Fish Co." Signed and dated "June 1971" l.r. Oil on Masonite, 16 1/4 x 18 1/4 in., in a period molded giltwood frame. Condition: Very good. Note: In typical fashion, Cahoon makes a casual reference in this work to give it another layer of meaning. This time it is to the well-known art dealer George Vigouroux, Jr. (his name appears on the banner being held by the sailor), who began a fruitful business relationship with Cahoon in 1959 at Vigouroux's Lobster Pot Gallery on Nantucket. The present work was executed two years after Cahoon (and his wife, Martha) cut ties with all gallery representation and began to sell their paintings themselves. The work can therefore be understood as an homage to an important figure in Cahoon's early career. overall measurements--ht.19 1/2" x 22 1/2"
