Attributed to William Matthew Prior (American, 1806-1873) Portrait of a Young Man Seated Before a Pillar Overlooking a Landscape at Sunset. Unsigned. Oil on canvas c. 1837, 31 1/2 x 27 in., in a later molded giltwood frame. Condition: Cleaned, restored, retouch to face, spots on jacket and background, laid down onto Masonite. Note: Leading up to restoration, the consignor states that the portrait was found on Nantucket, and was signed and dated by Prior on the back of the canvas. approx. 75 % of face has been repainted, and a few small spots on jacket, sleeves, and background.
