Mary Josephine Walters (American, 1837-1883) Coastal Landscape Signed "M. J. Walters" l.l. Watercolor and graphite on paper, 13 x 19 3/4 in. (33.0 x 50.2 cm), framed. Condition: Stain u.c. N.B. Mary Josephine Walters, also known as Josephine Walters or M.J. Walters, is one of only a few known woman artists of the Hudson River School. She studied under Asher B. Durand, and was said to have been his favorite female student. The watercolor has been laid on an acid backing. Sheet size of the watercolor itself is 14 x 21 in. (35.5 x 53.2 cm). Stain in the sky u.c. measures 3 1/4 x 3/4 in. Edges of the sheet are worn, with losses especially at the l.l. corner, but image is unaffected. Glue residue all around the perimeter of the sheet. Loss (2 1/4 x 1 in.) to backing support l.c. but does not affect the sheet.
