Gaston Lachaise (French/American, 1882-1935) Seated Nude with Leg Raised , c. 1934 Signed "G Lachaise" in ink l.r., inscribed "No. 4" in pencil l.r. Graphite and ink on paper, sheet size 24 1/8 x 19 in. (61.0 x 48.3 cm), framed. Condition: Cloth tape hinged to backing mat, old glue residue along top edge, mat burn, subtle toning. N.B. This large drawing of a playful, voluptuous nude was inspired by Isabel Dutaud Nagle (1872-1957), Lachaise's wife and muse, who informed his concept of "Woman"--a symbol of the life force. It exhibits the energetic draftsmanship of the artist's later graphic works. We are grateful to Virginia Budny for her assistance in preparing the catalogue entry for this work.
