Castera Bazile (Haitian, 1923-1966) Pitié maternelle Signed "CASTERA BAZILE" [with an inverted "Z"] l. r., dated "3/12/48" l.l., also inscribed and titled "No. 28-S-48..." on the backing. Oil and ink on canvasboard, 16 x 12 in. (40.6 x 30.5 cm), framed. Condition: Surface grime, minor surface abrasions. Provenance: Purchased in 1949 at L'Centre d'Art, Port-Au-Prince, by Marion Read Barbee Kier, St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands; by family descent. N.B. Castera Bazile was a domestic assistant to DeWitt Peters, founder of L'Centre d'Art in 1944. Inspired by the art he saw, Bazile began painting in 1945 and continued through 1962.
