Josef Albers (German, 1888-1976) Grüne Erde / Sketch for a Composition , c. 1940 Monogrammed "A" l.r., inscribed "Scetch [ sic ] for a composition" on the mount l.r., titled in the margin u.l. Oil and graphite on Albemarle paper, sheet size 4 1/4 x 6 5/8 in. (10.8 x 16.8 cm), framed. Condition: Tape hinged to backing mat. Provenance: Estate of an arts benefactor, New York. N.B. We wish to thank the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation for their kind assistance with cataloguing the lot; it will be included in their forthcoming Josef Albers catalogue raisonné and is registered as number 1940.2.12. The sheet has staining from old (possibly cellophane?) tape along the edges, plus newer hinging tape. The image is very subtly light struck.
