Carl Wuermer (American, 1900-1981) Village in Winter , alternatively titled Winter in the Valley , 1949 Signed "Carl Wuermer" l. l., inscribed "No. 304" in ink on the stretcher. Oil on canvas, 20 x 24 in. (51.0 x 61.2 cm), framed. Condition: Small area of retouch u.l., very fine craquelure, subtle canvas deformation. Provenance: Christie's East, October 4, 2000, Lot 200, to a private Maine collection. N.B. The present work is the winter version of an work created three years earlier entitled "Blossom Times, No. 270." While the spring version features apple trees flanking the road in the foreground, and the winter version has some changes to the background, both versions were composed from the same pencil sketch. We wish to thank James A. Rudolph for his kind assistance with cataloguing the lot, and the work will be included in his forthcoming catalogue raisonné on the artist. Subtle rippling to canvas l.r. corner, could benefit from re-keying.
