Henry Clarence Pitz (American, 1895-1976) Illustration for The Spy by James Fennimore Cooper . Signed "Henry C. Pitz" l.r., identified on a label in a pocket on the frame backing paper. Ink and wash on paper/board, sight size 14 x 9 3/4 in., framed. Condition: Subtle rippling, not examined out of frame. Provenance: From the estate of Gerald and Martha Schipper. N.B. A label on the reverse suggests that this drawing served as an illustration for an edition of The Spy published in 1963. However, library databases show there was an edition published in 1968 by Oxford University Press, but nothing for 1963. Some earlier 20th century editions date from 1924 and 1946.
