Robert Farrington Elwell (American, 1874-1962) Two Scenes Depicting Billy the Kid: The Killing of the Gambler in Mexico and Driving Off the Apaches . Signed "Elwell" l.c., inscribed "Set 1/Section 3" u.r. beneath window mat, inscribed "Billy the Kid/S.S. August 10th" in pencil on the reverse, identified on a label affixed to the frame backing. Pen and ink with two scenes on a single sheet, sheet size 10 x 22 7/8 in., framed. Condition: Mild toning, soiling to the margins. Provenance: From the estate of Gerald and Martha Schipper. N.B. A hand-written label from Jeff Dykes/Western Books affixed to the reverse reads, "Purchased from R. Farrington (Bob) Elwell in Phoenix about 1953. The two scenes are probably fictional...both from a picture story in a pulp magazine..." The inscription "S.S." on the reverse likely refers to Short Stories Magazine .
