Gilt-bronze Avalokiteshvara, Sino-Tibetan, 18th century, the eleven-headed thousand-armed divinity standing in samapada atop a double lotus throne, his primary hands in namaskara mudra, his lower right hand in varada mudra, four of his remaining hands holding kalasa , capa , mala , and padma , the other arms radiating around him symbolizing the thousand arms, nine of his eleven heads with serene expressions wearing a crested tiara, the tenth head of a wrathful Dharmapala with five-skull diadem, surmounted by the head of Amitabha Buddha, ht. 22 3/4 in. Provenance: Annelise Freiheit Collection; in a private collection since. Freiheit collected Tibetan bronzes inspired by a meeting with the Dalai Lama. Her collection was mainly acquired during her travels in Nepal and Southeast Asia around the 1970s and 80s when many bronzes went to market after the Cultural Revolution in China.
