Russian Icon of John the Baptist's Head on a Platter, Moscow, marked for Ovchinnikov, late 19th/early 20th century, the painting with holy spirit in the upper left corner and identified in the upper right corner, the filigreed halo stamped for gold and inset with faceted green and red stones and blue cabochons, and with seed pearl edging, with repousse sterling silver basma with polychrome cloisonne to corners and inset with faceted stones and pearls, marked to center of bottom edge, 8 7/8 x 7 in. Lengthwise crack along lower portion of painting, craquelure, lifting to identification at upper right. Dent to lower left corner of icon,. Enamel in good condition. Scattered small chips to faceted stones. Mark rubbed. Smaller stones appear to be genuine gemstones, while the larger stones are synthetics.
