Late Jacobean Carved Walnut Armchair, England, last quarter 17th century, the arched openwork crest centering two putti holding a radiant sphere over a sheep with a banner flanked by trumpeters, stiles with further putti interspersed with scrolling acanthus leaves, back and seat with caning, armrests carved with recumbent lions, over hilt-form supports, scrollwork seat rail, front legs with bird's heads and additional hilt, joined by front stretcher carved with an Indian flanked by two rearing horses and backed by scrolling acanthus, and joined by a further H-stretcher, on C-scroll feet, ht. 61 3/4, seat ht. 16 5/8, wd. 30 in. crest with small breaks to legs of lamb; one angel with restoration to one arm and with horn likely replaced; the other possibly with horn replaced; small spot of wood loss at piece of scrollwork (approx. 1"). small spots of cracking at one stile, at hilt-form accents at legs, and at front stretcher. Loss to one rib each in the two hilt-form details on right leg. some cracks showing a bit of glue. small spot of wood loss to upper right corner of edge of frame around the caning holes (approx. 1" x 1/4"). Both rear legs with replaced feet. medium to dark reddish brown finish, generally consistent but with some lighter areas from age/usage wear. minor shrinkage lines. applied scrollwork along edge of seat possibly later. construction feels sturdy. Caning seems sound. Overall age-typical scuffs, scratches, nicks, minor losses, and wear.
