American School, 19th Century Portrait of the White Star Line Ocean Liner Oceanic. Signed and dated "W.F. Preston 1899" l.r. Oil on canvas, 21 3/4 x 43 3/4 in., in a later molded gilt-gesso frame. Condition: Relined, retouch. Note: The Oceanic was launched in January of 1899, and placed in service between Liverpool, England, and New York. She was taken up for WWI by the Royal Navy to be an auxiliary cruiser, and was wrecked on the Shetlands September 8, 1914. Retouch to craquelure, large amount in sky, scattered areas to vessels, and water.
