William E. Baldwin (Belfast, Maine, 20th Century) Glory Meets Sovereign-1872. Signed and dated "1987" l.r. and verso, scene identified on label below. Oil on Masonite, 28 x 49 1/4 in., in a molded gilt-gesso and wood frame. Condition: Very good. Note: The Sovereign of the Seas was built in 1852, at 258 ft. she was the fastest and longest ship yet built when she was launched in New York. She was designed and built by Donald McKay, East Boston, America's foremost clipper designer. On her maiden voyage, she sailed from New York to San Francisco in 103 days. This ship achieved the fastest ever recorded speed of a sailing vessel (22 knots). The Glory of the Seas was the last clipper ship built by Donald McKay. She was a medium clipper ship, built in 1869.
