Two Needlework Samplers, 18th and 19th century, the first worked by Rachel Mercer of East Marlborough, Chester, Pennsylvania, stitched with wool yarns on a linen ground with rows of alphabets over the inscription "Rachel Mercer her sampler made in the 11 year ----- 1785/Abner anb[sic] Iane Mercer," and a series of family initials over a pious verse, (toning, stitch losses), 11 x 10; the second sampler worked by Sarah C. Tower, probably New England, early 19th century stitched with silk threads on a linen ground, with rows of alphabets over her signature and probable town "Westbrook" and a pious verse, (toning), 15 x 14 in.
