Polychrome Paint-Decorated Leather Fire Bucket, probably New England, early 19th century, the bucket painted black with an oval reserve inscribed "J. CORBETT" centered with the initials "J.E." over "2," with red and yellow foliate border, the initials "J.E." also painted on the back, with leather handle and red-painted collar, (tear, paint wear), ht. to top of collar, 13 1/2 in. Provenance: The fire bucket was possibly owned by John Elliot. Reportedly, the Elliot family came from New Hampshire, and married into the Daland family through Emily Elliot Daland. The Daland family, from Boston and Salem, owned the house on Vinalhaven, Maine, where the fire bucket was found. loss to one handle attachment reinforced with thin rope. Possibly some very old repaint as the shadow of a few of the letters showt through. 2 x 1 in angled tear on lower back of bucket.
