Anglo/American School, 18th Century Portrait of a Mason. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, the gentleman dressed in late 18th century clothing wearing a "jewel" (medal) formed by intersecting triangles known as "Solomon's Seal" centered with the "Triple TAU" (three Ts connected) and denotes a member of the Council of Royal and Select Masters, which is a body within the degrees of Royal Arch Masonry, with a temple in the background representing a Masonic temple, 30 1/4 x 25 in., in a later frame. Condition: Relined, scattered retouch, paint losses, stable craquelure. 1/2 in paint loss l. facing eyebrow, approx. 4 1/2 in areas to background several areas on jacket, stocl and vest, retouch to seral areas to jacket and background minor spot to face.
