Raymond Chirambadare (Zimbabwean, 20th Century) Humble Man. Signed "RAY CHIRAMBADARE" and incised on the reverse l.c. Green serpentine, 20 1/2 x 15 1/4 x 10 1/4 in. Condition: Scattered nicks and scratches, some surface flaws to stone, surface grime. N.B. Ray Chirambadare was a contemporary Shona artist. The sculpture at hand, representing an encircling embrace, expressed the Shona values of love and family. Chirambadare, who lived into his mid-30s, died about ten years ago. With three of his brothers and his sons, he had a sculpture workshop and outside gallery in the Township of Chitungweza, outside of Harare, in Zimbabwe. We would like to thank Steve Loitz of Exotic Imports and Exports, New Haven, Connecticut, for his help cataloging this sculpture and for suggesting the title based on his familiarity with the artist.
