Hugh Newell (Irish/American, 1830-1915) Half-length Portrait of a Girl with a Nosegay, Georgiana Nichols (1847-1930), c. 1884 . Unsigned. Oil on canvas, 22 x 17 1/2 in., framed in an oval format, under glass. Condition: Not examined out of frame. N.B. This work was commissioned by the sitter's husband, Eugene Sutherland, when Newell resided at the Sutherland estate in Montclair, New Jersey. The portrait was based on a daguerreotype of the sitter at age 7.
