Standing French Gendarme Character Doll, possibly Bernard Ravca, France and America, c. 1940, reportedly, this figure stood on the checkout counter of the Stork Club in New York City c. 1940; painted molded plaster head, hands and legs, the body stuffed with cotton, the figure wearing a navy blue wool kepi hat, cape, jacket, and trousers, white cotton shirt, and blue silk tie, with a nightstick attached to his waist, mounted on a round wooden base, (imperfections), ht. 25 1/2 in. Chips to plaster with paint losses to eyes, nose, and eyebrows, some seams on costume are open, body not line with stockinette, no maker's marks.
