Trump signed and inscribed within the image "The LINE of BEAUTY/And GRACE/HW 1745" l.l., and "Painted by W. Hogarth." l.l. and "Engraved by Benj Smith." l.r., both below the image; Muse inscribed and dated "William Hogarth. 1764" l.c. and "Comedy/1764" c.r., both within the plate (posthumous editions). Plate sizes to 15 7/8 x 14 in., sheet sizes to 25 1/8 x 19 1/4 in. Condition: Both with foxing, creasing, nicks, wear, toning, and small tears to edges, sheets each with one irregular edge. N.B. Described as a "manifesto portrait," Portrait of Hogarth with his Dog Trump depicts the line of beauty on the artist's palette, leather-bound books by Shakespeare, Milton, and Swift, and Hogarth's pug, Trump. Hogarth Painting the Comic Muse celebrates the artist's appointment as Sergeant Painter to George II. Largest tear appears on Muse , l.l. edge, measuring 1 1/4 in. Trump with crease at l.l. corner, approximately 8 in. across the diagonal. None of these issues affects the images.
