Watercolor on paperboard, 13 3/8 x 11 1/2 in. (33.5 x 29.2 cm), framed. Condition: Subtle mat burn and toning, affixed to window mat along four sides. N.B. Howard Williston Carter, Secretary of the Litchfield County University Club, wrote a brief history of the organization, which was published in Norfolk, Connecticut, in 1903. Founded in 1896, the club adopted this crest at their first Annual Meeting, June 16, 1897. Carter provided the following description: "The club also voted at this time to adopt the very tasteful and appropriate crest specially designed for the club by Mrs. Carl Stoeckel. The crest is surmounted by a branch of laurel, the flower most in evidence in Litchfield Hills about the time of the annual meeting of the club in June. In the center is an open book with the inscription: 'Litchfield County University Club, 1896," while underneath is the Latin legend, "Lux, Caritas, Unitas, Constantia," the initials of these words being also the initials of the name of the club."
