American Victorian Renaissance Revival Walnut Cabinet Secretary, Wooten Desk Manufacturing Company, Indiana, c. 1874-80, the "Standard Grade" model, pedimented crest with a shallow hinged compartment above a pair of paneled doors with mail slots, hinged on each side, with an extensively fitted interior and fall front inset writing surface, all on scrolled feet with casters, ht. 68, wd. closed 39 1/2 open 78, dp. closed 27 in. Literature: Desk illustrated in Wooten Patent Desks, by Betty Lawson Walters, p. 35, fig. 2, and The Illustrated Catalogue of Wooten's Patent Cabinet Secretaries and Rotary Office Desks 1876, p. 3, fig. 2. Surface abrasions to top surface and several ring marks. Several nicks consistent with usage to doors, right side door with seven inch crack to veneer, left side door with chips to inner edge around the hinge. Interior with usage wear to the writing surface and compartments. Both doors in need of adjustment to the hinges. Internal locking mechanism with possible restorations. No key included. Loss to paint within ebonized incised motif of the fall-front surface. Back feet with some chips consistent with usage. Back panel replaced. Missing small urn finials from the corners of the gallery.
