Attributed to Allan Ramsay (Scottish, 1713-1784) Portrait of a Lady Holding a Book of Verse Unsigned, identified on a presentation plaque. Oil on canvas, 30 3/16 x 25 in. (76.7 x 63.2 cm), framed. Condition: Lined, retouch, craquelure, surface grime. N.B. The sitter holds The Seasons , a volume of four poems on the seasons of the year by James Thompson (1700–1748), a Scottish poet and playwright. This portrait is sold for the benefit of the collections of the Smith College Museum of Art. Provenance: Bequest of the Rosemary Denniston estate, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Smith College, Northampton, Massachusetts, 2001. Smith College Museum of Art printed label with handwritten number "TR5289" affixed to the stretcher. Lined and stretched on a newer stretcher, prevalent but stable craquelure, old retouch along left side and beside the sitter's right arm, with broad washes of retouch to background. Surface grime and discolored varnish. The framed dimensions are 37 1/2 x 32 3/8 inches.
