Anglo/American School, 19th Century A Terrace Garden, Possibly Rome Initialed "... E." l.r., inscribed in pencil "Return to Mrs. Anderson, Weld, Jamaica Plains [sic]" on the stretcher. Oil on canvas, 23 x 19 in. (58.5 x 48.2 cm), framed. Condition: Surface grime. Provenance: From Larz Anderson Estate, Brookline, Massachusetts. N.B. The initials on the l.r. of the painting at hand could be read as "I.E." or perhaps "J.E." One suggested attribution is to John Elliott (American, 1858-1925), a British-born painter, muralist, and architect, who spent time in Rome and also in Boston, where he painted the ceiling in the Elliott Room in the McKim Building. The capital letters of John Elliott's signature as reproduced in Who Was Who in American Art resemble the initials on the painting at hand, and the work is inscribed "Elliot" [ sic ] on the stretcher. Also inscribed "Elliot" on the stretcher, and titled indistinctly "Terrace..." possibly "Terrace Rome" or "Terrace Berne."
