Pair of Classical Mahogany Klismos Side Chairs, attributed to Duncan Phyfe, New York, c. 1810-20, the carved crest rail above an ogee banister back, the cylindrical reeded front seat rail atop foliate-carved, hairy shank-and-paw front legs and square tapered rear legs, refinished, (imperfections), ht. 32, seat ht. 18 in. Provenance: Purchased from Israel Sack, Inc., in 1963; the estate of Virginia Couper Johnson, 1963. Note: The chairs closely resemble one described in plate 22, Kenny, et al., Duncan Phyfe: Master Cabinetmaker in New York (New York, 2011). one chair with repaired break on either side of ogee banister back, both with wear on seat rails and repairs to front feet, interior seat rails added to accommodate modern upholstered seat over evidence of old caning.
