Plains Pipe Tomahawk, c. 1870s, the ash handle faceted toward the hand-forged head, decorated with brass tacks and two drops of large trade beads, brass thimbles, and ribbon strung on hide, lg. 24 3/4 in. Provenance: Collected by Indian Agent John H. Waugh while at Fort Totten, North Dakota, during his employment from 1882-1903. Remained in the Waugh family until 1961 when it was placed in the Whitte Museum, San Antonio, Texas, and in 1972 to the Houston Museum of Natural History.
