Manner of Philip van Dijk (Dutch, 1680-1753), After Tiziano Vecelli, called Titian (Italian, c. 1485-1576) The Holy Family with Cherubs Unsigned, identified on a presentation plaque and on a hand-inscribed label affixed to the stretcher, inscribed "E. E. Heath Husken Esq." and with a red wax seal on the stretcher. Oil on canvas, 40 1/4 x 50 1/4 in. (102.0 x 127.5 cm), framed. Condition: Lined, patch reinforcement, retouch, craquelure, surface grime. The lining is adhered with glue or resin. Original canvas was trimmed and lined, and the lining appears to be quite old. There is a patch to the reverse that corresponds to a repair, measuring 2 3/4 x 1 1/2 inches, in the blue drapery near Mary's feet. There is scattered retouch, some to the putti in the sky u.l., in the background trees on the right, and to fill craquelure. The faces of the Holy Family seem to be untouched. While UV light does not show significant retouch, given the age and the lining, one would expect that there may be older repairs that do not show up under UV. Overall craquelure that appears stable.
