Spanish Colonial School, 18th/19th Century Madonna and Child Unsigned. Oil on canvas, 20 1/2 x 14 1/4 in. (52.0 x 36.2 cm), framed. Condition: Lined, retouch, scattered craquelure. The lot is accompanied by a copy of a sales receipt from 1989 from South Essex Antiques (Essex, MA), which lists the painting as "18th c. South American oil." Canvas with a coarse weave. Surface irregularity along bottom edge, 3 inches up from the bottom, running fully across the composition, consisting of dimples or puckers in a regular rhythm that would suggest possible stitching. Another surface irregularity in the l.l. corner where there is an area of canvas that shows a weave finer that the surrounding areas. An old repair or tear measuring 3 inches located in the center, running from the edge of the Madonna's right hand over to the the tops of the fingers of her left hand and corresponding to a patch reinforcement on the reverse. Dots of retouch to the figure's faces, a line of retouch down the rights hand side of the Madonna's robe, some brushstrokes of retouch to drapery at u.r. corner and to the floral decoration at the bottom of the composition.
