Salvatore L. Aucello (American, b. 1903) Chicago Street Corner Signed and dated "S. Aucello 1943" l.r., identified on a partial label affixed to the paper backing. Watercolor on paper/board, sight size 15 5/8 x 19 3/4 in. (40.0 x 50.5 cm), framed. Condition: Gentle toning, not examined out of frame. N.B. Salvatore Aucello studied at the National Academy of Design and was a project planner for the Public Works of Art Project. A label on the back of this work identifies the scene as the corner of 14th Street (Chicago), but the name of the cross street, while specified on the label, is no longer legible. Aucello is best known for his public murals in New York City, including one at the Chrysler Building. The location shown in this watercolor is W. 14th Place and Sangamon in Chicago, currently known as University Village. It can be seen on Google Earth at 922 W. 14th Place, Chicago, Illinois. It is on the corner across from the ball field.
