Johann Berthelsen (American, 1883-1972) Snowy Street, Times Square Signed "Johann Berthelsen" l. r. Oil on canvas board, 20 x 16 in. (50.5 x 40.5 cm), framed (under glass). Condition: Minor frame abrasion. N.B. The painting at hand, with the snow depicted using heavy impasto applied with a palette knife, would suggest a date in the 1940s. The scene shows Times Square, with the New York Times building in the center and the Astor Hotel on the right. We wish to thank Lee Berthelsen, the artist's son, for his kind help cataloguing this lot.
