Ulysse Nardin Two-day Marine Chronometer, Locle, Switzerland, No. 1273, 4-in. dia. silvered dial signed Ulysse Nardin Locle Suisse , 1264 and 1273 , "Up-Down" indicator, gold hands, 3/4 spotted plate chain drive fusee movement with maker's mark and 1273 , split bi-metallic two arm balance with diamond endstone, helical hairspring and spring detent escapement, lacquered brass bowl and gimbals in a brass-bound two-tiered mahogany box with maker's plate, boss marked 1273 and carrying handles, all in a padded transport box, ht. 9 1/2, dp. 9 1/2, wd. 11 1/2 in. boxed. Provenance: This chronometer was presented to Sanford L. Cluett in 1898 by J.W. Alfred Cluett. An undated baggage label affixed to the box indicates that Sanford Cluett sailed with this chronometer on the Vulcania from New York to Cannes. Sanford Lockwood Cluett patented "Sanforizing" a process to reduce fabric shrinkage during laundering. Original lacquer on plated, brass bowl and gimbals, discoloration on lacquered movement surfaces and blued screws, movement runs when wound.
