James Arthur Regulator with Remontoir, New York, 1901, the maple case with molded top, glazed dial and waist doors and mirrored back, the skeletonized movement stamped with maker's name and date with three front mounted dials, seconds at the top, hours object lower right and minutes, lower left, dead-beat escapement with adjustable pallet faces, lever activated one minute remontoir rewound by the large brass cased weight and internal "ball" pulley all regulated by a steel grid iron pendulum and cylindrical bob, ht. 81 in. Note: This clock is illustrated and discussed in James Arthur, Time and Its Measurement (1909) , pp. 39-40. For additional information about the creative mechanic, James Arthur see: Robert C. Cheney, "James Arthur: Pioneer Collector and Benefactor", pp. 329-337, The Quest for Longitude . Movement stamped "James Arthur 1901" and "The James Arthur Company 1901" on the front plate. The front plate also carries an applied plaque stating: "Daniel Arthur, from his Father James Arthur, June 13th 1901." Movement in old lacquered surface, needs cleaning/lubrication, dial chapter rings with original silvering, case in refinished condition, weight, pendulum and case components are the original.
