Important pair of Salem, Massachusetts Hepplewhite mahogany dining chairs, ca. 1795 , the carving attributed to Samuel McIntire, each with a shield back and central urn with swags and further adorned with sheaves of wheat and grape clusters, above an overupholstered seat, supported by square tapering legs with relief grape vine decoration, terminating in spade feet. The present chairs are closely related to the set made for Elias Hasket Derby, a wealthy Salem merchant. Pook & Pook would like to thank Walter Mullen for his assistance in documenting and preparing these chairs for exhibition. Provenance: Estate of William Thorwarth.
