JOHNSBURY VT.," 19th century, tapered cylindrical form with stenciled inscription, black-painted ground with dark red rim band and foot, ht. 4 3/4 in. Provenance: John Carl Thomas, Hanover, Connecticut. Note: The Fairbanks Scales manufacturing company was founded in 1830 in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, by brothers Thaddeus and Erastus Fairbanks. Their business experienced such growth that by the time of the Civil War the company's scales were world renowned.
