"Red Book Artist" Silhouette Portrait of a Woman Holding a Red Book, America, c. 1840, watercolor on paper with hollow-cut silhouette head, depicting a woman wearing a dark red dress belted at the waist, with a lacy white collar, her bonnet trimmed with red and blue striped ribbons, (toning), 4 3/8 x 3 1/2 in., in a period molded giltwood frame. The background of the portrait paper is toned, it is not laid down, no tears or repairs, pigment separation to the red paint on the dress.
