Attributed to Gerard Joseph Xavery (Flemish, 18th Century) Elaborate Floral Still Life Signed or inscribed and dated "G J. Xavery/1754" l.l., identified on a label from American Art Association/Anderson Galleries, Inc., affixed to the stretcher. Oil on canvas, 33 1/4 x 27 5/8 in. (84.5 x 70.0 cm), in a Maurice Grieve frame. Condition: Lined, scattered retouch, craquelure, surface grime. Provenance: American Art Association, Anderson Galleries, XVI-XIX century oil paintings and a small group of primitives, February 4-5, 1931, Sale code 3887, Lot 70; collection of Victoria (née Frelinghuysen) Bates (1907-2002); by family descent to the present owners. N.B. The auction label from American Art Association/Anderson Galleries, Inc., and the catalogue entry for Lot 70 for that sale (3887) identify the artist as Jacob Xavery (Dutch, active 1746-1771). The area around the signature appears scrubbed and there may be the remnant of a second inscription to the left of the signature. Scattered old retouch beneath the varnish layer, particularly to u.l. and l.r. quadrant; fine craquelure to both varnish and paint layers throughout; skinning to petals of pale blue hydrangeas l.l. and white flowers u.r.; no additional condition issues to report.
