French or Italian School, 18th Century Jacob and the Angel Unsigned, identified on a label affixed to frame backing. Conté crayon on paper, sheet size 17 1/4 x 12 5/8 in. (43.5 x 32.3 cm), framed. Condition: Sheet trimmed to image, hinged to backing at two places on left side, and affixed to backing at u.r. corner. N.B. A label affixed to the frame backing states that the drawing was attributed to Pietro da Cortona, from the collection of Joseph Colbacchini, and was sold at Sotheby's, London, May 22, 1871 (Lugt 32489). A review of a microfilm version of the sale catalogue showed six lots of Old Master Drawings (Lots 123-128), but unfortunately they were grouped together under the general heading of "Old Italian Masters from the XVIth and XVIIth centuries" without further information on any specific lot. An plain typed label affixed to the frame backing attributes the work to Pietro Berettina da Cortona (Italian, 1596-1669), and states that the work was from the collection of Joseph Colbacchini, sold at auction May 22, 1871, at Sotheby's, London. (Lugt 32489). Heavy paper sheet with no apparent watermark. Very minor rippling. Small stain and a very minor loss to u.r. corner where the sheet is affixed to the back mat.
