French School, 18th Century Full-length Portrait of an Aristocratic Woman with a Dog Unsigned, with a label from Bedel & Cie, Le Garde Meuble Public, Paris, affixed to the stretcher. Oil on canvas, 53 x 42 3/4 in. (134.5 x 108.5 cm), framed. Condition: Lined, scattered retouch, craquelure, surface abrasions. Partial Bedel & Cie label bearing the stamped number "55703" Area of superficial scratching u.r. quadrant in an area measuring roughly 11 x 6 inches, but with some scratches extending as long as 23 inches. Scratches also on the balustrade beneath the lion. Retouch confined primarily to the background, as follows: vertical line to right of the face measuring 4-1/2 inches long and about 1-1/2 inches wide; a horizontal line above head to left, measuring 4-1/2 inches across; a line to the u.r. quadrant measuring 6 inches across and 1 inch high; scattered dots and dashes to background, with the largest dots measuring about 1 inch in diameter; retouch to the dress, left of waist, in an area measuring 3 x 1 inches, and with touch up around the buttons at the waist; dots and dashes of retouch along the very bottom of the canvas, mainly in the lower 5 inches. Probable old restoration and retouch, which does not fluoresce, to u.l. quadrant particularly in an area measuring 2 inches square located the darkest area of the trees, with possible skinning around the tops of the trees.
