At twelve years old, his father gave him his first camera, a Kodak Brownie. Porter grew up to study medicine and became a research biologist, but constantly returned to photography and nature walks. An accidental meeting with Ansel Adams spurred his interest in a more serious direction, and when his brother, painter Fairfield Porter, introduced him to Alfred Stieglitz, Porter shifted careers. While he was successful with his black and white work in the 1930s, it was his dye transfer work that was both unique in the 1940s and pioneering.
