James Holland (British, 1799-1870) The Dogana, Venice Signed, dated, and inscribed "Dogana da Mare o di TransitóJas Holland. 1853" on the reverse. Oil on board, 12 5/8 x 13 in. (32.5 x 33.0 cm), framed in a round format. Condition: Old retouch, surface grime. With a label from The Gallery of John Nicholson, New York, on the back of the frame. Areas of possible old retouch in the deepest blue hues of the sky and also in the dark shadows of the water immediately beneath the foreground gondola. However, the surfaces fluoresce only palely and do not suggest any recent restoration. There is a subtle surface abrasion visible in raking light that measures about 8 inches long overall and runs vertically from the crenellation on the building at the upper right down to the bottom edge, just right of center.
