Albert Van Beest (American, 1820-1860) Two Studies of War of 1812 Naval Engagements Signed "AVan Beest" in pencil l. l. and l.r., respectively, identified on information affixed to the backing. Ink wash and graphite on paper, sight sizes to 7 x 9 1/2 in. (17.8 x 24.1 cm), both framed. Condition: Toning, restored tears and paper losses, not examined out of frames. Provenance: A prominent Cincinnati, Ohio, collector. N.B. Biographical literature and a copy of the conservation report from the Intermuseum Laboratory, Oberlin, Ohio, April 29, 1998, accompany the lot. Out of their frames, the sheets measure 7 1/4 x 9 5/8 inches, and have nicks along their lefts edges, probably due to having been bound into a sketchbook. The shooting scene is inscribed "Study for Battle Lake Erie Van Beest" in the reverse, and has extensive repairs (visible on verso). The foundering dory scene has several repairs visible on the reverse.
